Poultry Welfare Officer– Redgrave PM shift

Responsibilities
Demonstrate competence with regards to animal welfare, including knowledge of the basic behavioural patterns and the needs of the bird as well as signs of consciousness and sensibility.
The PWO is the primary expert on site that is responsible for all Welfare of animals from the point unloading to Throat cutting. This person is qualified to the required level of competency. This can be gained by experience or academic qualification’s (but usually a combination of the two)
The PWO is to be at his work area at all times, unless suitable cover is available and present. This includes all stages of the day whilst there are live birds present on site.
It is part of the PWO’s duties to monitor the Welfare of the live birds on site, review the current handling practices and correct as necessary. Should there be a breakdown, it is also the PWO’s responsibility to firstly ensure that there is no immediate bird welfare issue (for example a trapped bird), to notify maintenance, to alert the hangers on, once close to the 1 minute breakdown and to remove the birds from the stunner and from the slope.
The PWO is also to record any breakdown, timings and actions taken.
The PWO is also responsible for verifying the cleaning of all the trailers.
It is also part of the PWO’s duties to:
• Complete a start-up check on the stunner (gas and electric)
• Check all fans and alarms are working
• Check captive bolt equipment is fully working and clean
• Check lighting levels are acceptable
Should there be any welfare issue, this is their utmost responsibility and all their actions and faults found must be recorded.
Job Type: PM shift
Hours: 14:30pm – 23:00pm (Monday to Friday)
Salary: £10.45 per hour (probation period) + £50 attendance bonus (based on attendance if full week worked), £11.15 per hour (after completion of probation) + £50 attendance bonus (based on attendance if full week worked)
Reporting: Production Manager

Candidate must be able to relocate to our Debach site over the Christmas campaign to support our busiest time of the year.
